Content-Driven Brand Redesign

Content Strategy

An end-to-end brand and content redesign for a local independent bookstore, focused on clarifying narrative and aligning visual systems across touchpoints.

Brand Narrative
Content Design
01. Context & Challenge
Context

Bookman is a local independent bookstore in my neighborhood, known for its eclectic collection

and long-standing presence in the community.
Over time, however, its brand expression had grown organically without a unified system, resulting in a fragmented visual identity.

Challenge

The primary challenge was not redesigning individual assets, but clarifying what Bookman stood for and how that identity was communicated consistently across touchpoints.

Specifically, the challenges included:

  • Inconsistent use of logos, colors, and typography across materials

  • No clear narrative or positioning for new visitors encountering the brand for the first time

  • Visual assets that felt disconnected rather than part of a cohesive system

Why it mattered

As a result, it was difficult for new audiences to clearly understand the bookstore’s identity,

despite its strong local reputation.

02. Strategy Before Design
Strategic Approach

Before redesigning any visual assets, I focused on clarifying the brand’s narrative, priorities,

and system level direction.

What Needed to Be Clarified

I identified three key questions that needed to be answered before design exploration began:

  • What does Bookman stand for, beyond being a used bookstore?

  • What should new audiences understand within their first interaction with the brand?

  • How can visual elements work together as a system rather than isolated assets?

Research & Planning

To explore these questions, I focused on aligning assumptions and goals before any visual design work began. I consolidated key considerations into a creative brief that helped guide design decisions

throughout the project.

Strategy Outcomes

This process resulted in a set of strategic decisions that guided all design work:

  • Position Bookman as a warm, eclectic neighborhood bookstore rather than a generic used bookstore

  • Prioritize clarity and approachability for first-time visitors

  • Treat visual identity as a flexible system that could scale across touchpoints

With this strategic foundation in place, I began exploring visual directions that could express these priorities consistently.

03. Narrative Exploration
Why Narrative Exploration Was Needed

Before committing to a visual direction, I explored multiple narrative approaches to understand how Bookman’s identity could be communicated most clearly and intuitively.

Narrative Directions Explored

Approach A

This direction framed Bookman as a warm, approachable neighborhood bookstore.
The newly developed mascot, a friendly book character reading another book, was designed to make the bookstore’s identity immediately recognizable.

The goal was for passersby and first time visitors to instantly associate the mascot with books and reading, even without prior familiarity with the brand.

When I shared both directions with classmates for feedback, this approach was consistently described as more clearly communicating “bookstore identity” at a glance.

Approach  B

This direction drew inspiration from Bookman’s existing website, which carried a quirky, retro sensibility reminiscent of 1950s design. I explored bold primary colors and characteristic mid-century patterns to preserve the nostalgic charm already present in the brand.

Evaluation & Decision

While both directions reflected different facets of Bookman’s character, the whimsical and cozy narrative better supported the project’s primary goal: making the bookstore’s identity immediately clear and approachable for new audiences.

This approach prioritized clarity and friendliness over stylistic nostalgia, without losing the warmth of the bookstore’s personality.

This narrative direction then informed the visual system and identity design that followed.

04. Content System & Visual Identity
4-1 From Narrative to System

Based on the selected whimsical and cozy narrative, I translated the core ideas into a flexible content and visual system that could scale across different brand touchpoints.

4-2 Content System
The content system focused on clarity and approachability, prioritizing immediate recognition of Bookman as a bookstore while maintaining a warm, friendly tone.

Key content principles included:
  • Making the bookstore’s purpose immediately clear for first-time visitors
  • Supporting a friendly, neighborhood-oriented brand personality
  • Allowing visual elements and mascots to carry meaning without relying on heavy copy
4-3 Visual Identity System
The visual identity was designed to support the content system, reinforcing warmth, friendliness, and recognizability across all brand materials.

Mascot & Logo System

The mascot played a central role in the identity system, acting as an immediate visual cue that reinforces
the bookstore’s purpose and personality.

Color & Typography

A soft, inviting color palette and rounded typography were chosen to complement the whimsical tone without overwhelming the content.

Flexibility & Scalability

The system was designed to remain flexible, allowing the identity to adapt across signage, social media, merchandise, and digital touchpoints.
4-4 System in Use

Based on the selected whimsical and cozy narrative, I translated the core ideas into a flexible content and visual system that could scale across different brand touchpoints.

These applications demonstrate how the content and visual system work together to create a consistent and approachable brand experience.

05. Communicating the Strategy
5-1 Why Communication Mattered

Beyond designing the system, it was equally important to communicate the strategy clearly to stakeholders and demonstrate how the identity could be applied in real-world contexts.

5-2 Pitch Deck Structure

The final pitch deck was structured to guide stakeholders through the problem, strategic rationale, and system-level outcomes in a clear and engaging way.

5-3 What the Deck Communicated

The final pitch deck was structured to guide stakeholders through the problem, strategic rationale, and system-level outcomes in a clear and engaging way.

  • The brand challenge and context

  • The chosen narrative direction and rationale

  • How the content and visual system worked together

  • How the system could scale across touchpoints

5-4 Deck Structure Highlights

The final pitch deck was structured to guide stakeholders through the problem, strategic rationale, and system-level outcomes in a clear and engaging way.

(1) About Bookman

The final pitch deck was structured to guide stakeholders through the problem, strategic rationale, and system-level outcomes in a clear and engaging way.

(2) Design Challenges

Clearly articulated the core challenges around fragmented brand expression and lack of immediate clarity for new audiences.

(3) Project Goals

Framed clear, strategy-led goals that guided both narrative exploration and system design.

(4) Appendix

The appendix included supporting materials, such as brand audit research, stakeholder and customer surveys, a creative brief, project management documentation, and proposal materials, to provide transparency into the strategy and decision making process without interrupting the main narrative.

06. Appendix — Supporting Documentation

The following materials are provided as optional references to offer deeper visibility into the research, planning, and documentation that supported this project.

07. Reflection & Learnings

This project reinforced the importance of treating brand, content, and visual design as a single system rather than separate deliverables. Starting with narrative alignment before visual execution helped ensure that design decisions were intentional, consistent, and easier to communicate to stakeholders.

I learned that clear structure and documentation are just as critical as visual outcomes. Materials such as the creative brief, proposal, and pitch deck played a key role in aligning assumptions, clarifying priorities, and translating strategy into something others could understand and act on.

If this project were extended in a real-world setting, I would prioritize validating the narrative direction through lightweight user and stakeholder feedback, then iterate on tone, messaging, and applications across touchpoints. This experience strengthened my interest in content strategy and content design roles where storytelling, structure, and execution intersect.
